Chapter Ten - Lance

"Awesome place!" I cheer, standing in Captain Parker's new seventeenth-floor apartment.

"Thanks, the rent's a steal for this building. You in trouble at work already? I wasn't expecting the phone call from your new boss; sounds like a serious issue he's battling."

"I appreciate the fact you vouched for me. He suspects a couple of IT employees are mismanaging data, potentially sharing information with our largest competitor."

"If anyone can catch a thief, it's you."

We exit his new digs and head down the elevator on our way to O'Malley's.

"The real estate agent I met today would be perfect for you; you should call her."

I chuckle at the coincidence. My girl Aiden is also in the business.

"Thanks for the thought, but I'm seeing someone."

"Damn, that was fast. Does she have a sister?"

Captain waves at the concierge, and we both inhale a huge breath of salty sea air as we exit the glass door.

"O'Malley's is this way," I point, my feet halting as I see Aiden exiting the hotel across the street and accepting an intimate hug from a strange man.

"Snap, there she is. That's the real estate agent I was telling you about!"

Well, it sure as fuck is, and she's wearing the provocative red dress, kissing the jerk.

"Let's go," I grumble, my angry strides long and quick.

"Do you know her?" Captain asks, mirroring my pace.

"I thought so. No matter," I reply, fighting back my urge to confront her in the middle of the street.

We arrive at the bar, and I shift the conversation to the good times aboard ship, calming down after two refreshing beers. He mentions Archer has an opportunity to train as a fighter pilot with the Air Force, and Luke's doing okay since returning home to an empty house.

My phone pings as the chili cheese fries arrive, a text from the woman I thought was my girlfriend.

"I'm in the neighborhood, can I stop by?"

Two booty calls in one night? Yeah, I don't think so.

I turn off the ringer and refocus on the greasy goodness. How could I have been so wrong about Aiden? Am I so desperate to be with a woman I missed obvious signals she's only interested in a fling?

"Hey, Lance, don't let a girl get you down," Captain interrupts, seeing the forlorn expression on my disappointed face.

"You're right. There are plenty of good-looking women at my office. I'm sure I'll find someone soon."

We toast to new opportunities, finishing the food, and meandering out the exit.

"Thanks again for the good word," I say, shaking Captain's hand and hanging my head low.

I've gone from falling in love to being cheated on in twenty-four hours. It's hard to misread her willing lips on another guy's mouth. The fact that she had the nerve to text me after her rendezvous is equally upsetting.

Two more texts arrive before I walk into my condo and plop wearily down on the couch. If there were any possible way I misread the situation, I'd return her message in a heartbeat. I've only known her for five days; to think I was already in love is ridiculous anyway.
